'I adored her for 36 years - every minute of it' - Minister Katherine Zappone
Viewers were moved by Minister Katherine Zappone's emotional interview on Thursday night's The Six O’Clock Show.
Minister Zappone was comforted by hosts Muireann O'Connell and Martin King on the TV3 show when she became emotional speaking about her late wife Dr Ann Louise Gilligan.
Dr Gilligan died following a short illness in June this year.
Minister Zappone revealed that she had shared the news of the budget with Ann last year and was upset that she could not do the same this year.
"It’s really important for me to take the time out, because if you don’t take the time out you don’t really feel present, to try and let the grief integrate with who I am, to really know that she’s not here and she won’t ever be here," she said.
As the Minister spoke, Muireann joined her on the sofa to console her as she continued, "And you know we had a budget, but it was like going home that evening I couldn’t tell her all about it, which is what I did last year.
"Having said that I have a fantastic team around me and it’s really important to stay in the now. I know Anne Louise thought I was in a point in my life where I was really soaring, so I have to keep doing that. I don’t necessarily think it’s tougher for me than any other person who’s lost someone that they love. I adored her for 36 years every minute of it.”
Viewers were moved by the Minster's words.
