He's best known for playing bad boys in Love/Hate and Fair City but actor Johnny Ward is looking forward to being a gentleman on Dancing with the Stars.

He's the latest addition to the line-up for the hit RTE show, which kicks off on Sunday, January 6, and will see eleven celebrities paired with professional dancers in the hope of winning the coveted glitter ball trophy.

"For once I get to be a gentleman rather than a psychotic gangster, kidnapper or clamper! I’m really looking forward to joining the show and leaning a new skill," he said.  "The nerves are there but I’m up for the challenge and loving every minute of the experience.”

Johnny revealed he was on board on Today with Maura and Dáithí on RTE One this evening and the remaining celebrities are expected to be revealed on The Late Late Show.

Previously confirmed contestants including fellow former Fair City star Clelia Murphy, presenter Mairead Ronan, actress Eilish O'Carroll, GAA star Denis Bastick, stylist and presenter Darren Kennedy, comedian Fred Cooke, and former Miss Ireland Holly Carpenter.

There will be no elimination for the first two shows this year but from week three one celebrity and their partner will be eliminated from the competition until the winner is announced on March 24.

Jennifer Zamparelli will be taking over from Amanda Byram this year as co-presenter Nicky Byrne while the judges will remain the same - Brian Redmond, Loraine Barry and Julian Benson.

The preview show Can't Stop Dancing will be hosted by Bláthnaid Treacy and will return on Friday January 4 on RTE One to go behind the scenes with the celebs ahead of their first dance.
