When Hayley learns that she has terminal pancreatic cancer, she decides to end her own life by drinking a poisonous cocktail. Hayley was the first transgender character on the Coronation Street cobbles and her suicide plot left viewers devastated.
Shop assistant Sunita was knocked unconscious in a fight when she found Karl Munro, her secret ex-lover, setting fire to The Rovers Return Inn. Sunita was left knocked to the ground as the fire took over, but was brought to hospital and put on life support. However, when Munro learns that Sunita is beginning to regain consciousness, he pulls out her oxygen tube leaving her to die.
One of the favourite character’s on the show, Tina’s death was a major surprise to viewers. Tina’s death occurred when Rob Donovan learned that Peter Barlow was in a relationship with Tina, despite being engaged to his sister Carla. When Tina threatened to tell the police about Rob’s illegal stock business and Carla about Peter’s affair with her, a fight breaks out between the pair.
Tina fell to the cobbles after taking the fight onto the balcony, where Rob presumes she dies. However, when Peter realises Tina didn’t die from the fall, he beats her repeatedly with a metal pole. When Tina was brought to hospital after being found by Carla, she suffers a fatal heart attack resulting in her death.
Richard Hillman’s attempt to kill his family is perhaps the most memorable death storyline of all time on Coronation Street. After his wife Gail learns that he murdered his ex-wife and their neighbour, she tells the police and Richard goes on the run.
A few weeks later he returns to Weatherfield with plans to kill himself, Gail, her two children David and Sarah and Sarah’s daughter Bethany. He holds the family captive and loads them into the car with the intention to gas them, when his plans are disturbed by Gail’s mother Audrey. He then drives the car into a canal, but the family manage to escape as it plummets into the water and Richard drowns.
While Tracy Barlow was notorious for her villainous ways, no one expected her to murder her on-off lover Charlie Stubs. Tracy finally decided to finish their manipulative relationship when she found out that Charlie was having an affair. Just as their relationship reached breaking point, Tracy insisted on performing a lap dance for him. During their moment of passion she smacked him over the head with a heavy ornament, resulting in his death in hospital.
