Father of Irish Big Brother star on son's bisexuality revelation: 'I'm a very hurt man'
The father of Irish Big Brother contestant, Hughie Maughan, said he's "hurt" by his son's bisexuality revelation.
Hughie Maughan, from Ballymun, made his debut on the hit TV show earlier this week.
Before heading off to London, the 21-year-old, who lives on a Dublin halting site, came out to his immediate family as bisexual.
His father, Hughie Maughan Senior, said he's proud of his son but hurt by the revelation.
"I am very proud of Hughie but hurt about what I am after finding out," he told The Sun.
"If God came to me and said, 'I can change Hughie back to the way he was but you must lose your life', I would do it right away.
"I would walk into my grave right now.
"I wouldn't think twice about it."
The 44-year-old, who is a former boxing trainer, said he's worried that his son's life may become difficult as a result of identifying as bisexual.
"The reason is I'm afraid for Hughie and what sort of life he has ahead of him now.
"I hope I can reconcile with him because I can't sleep at night."
He added: "Hughie was crying when he rang up and told his sister and then asked her to tell me.
"My son is a very private person who wouldn't tell you anything.
"His mother is very upset and taking it very hard."
Hughie Sr has raised thousands of euro for Temple Street Children's Hospital but is struggling to come to terms with his son's identity.
"I've done races for 16 hours without stopping and I thought that was the hardest thing in my life but it wouldn't come close to dealing with this.
"I hope God can help us through this but the most important thing is that Hughie can get through this."
"No one knows what we are going through.
"I'm a very hurt man at at the moment."
The father admitted that he can't push his son's revelation out of his mind and the worry surrounding it consumes him dailly.
"I can't sleep, I go out and cycle my bike and come home and then it hits me again.
"Because I think of the life of what Hughie has ahead of him and I'm so worried."
