Fans aghast as still no escape for Fair City's long-suffering Katy on Sunday but it looks like the end is nigh

There were dramatic scenes in Carrigstown last night as Emmet finally came face-to-face with his sister's evil kidnapper.

Speculation had been rife in the days leading up to last night's hour-long Fair City special that Katy would escape her ordeal, after being held against her will by Ciaran for over a year.

But there was no respite for Katy who remained locked up by the closing credits.

However, with her brother now knowing the truth, it looks as though she could be closer than ever to freedom.

Viewers saw Emmet being given an ultimatum by Katy's captor, after which he agreed to trade his life for his sister's.

In return, Ciaran agreed to let Katy phone her brother to prove that she was still alive.

However, things did not go to plan for the troubled kidnapper when Katy's grandmother Rose answered the phone instead of Emmet.

On the other end, Emmet was furious when he realised Rose had ruined his chances of speaking to his sister.

He denied his grandmother was speaking to Katy at all, making Rose think she was going senile and leading everyone not to believe she had actually been speaking to her granddaughter.

Later, Ciaran got to work ridding all traces of Katy from her room. As he worked, he moved the shelving back, exposing the door to the room.

A panicked Emmet soon arrived to ask Ciaran for advice after receiving the ultimatum from the mysterious captor.

Ciaran was shocked by Emmet's arrival and managed to get him to leave before he had noticed the open door. Ciaran quickly rushed to close the door but Emmet had already returned, having forgotten his phone.

He soon realised what Ciaran was doing and was left in shock when he saw the hidden door behind the shelving unit.

Emmet then put two and two together and realised after months of agony that Ciaran was his sister's captor.

The kidnapping saga has become one of Fair City's longest-running storylines in its 27-year history. The programme returns tomorrow night at 8pm on RTE One.

Some fans were enraged by the failure of the writers to wrap up the storyline, but others were hugely entertained by the fact it's still running.

'Do they not realise how fed up we are?' - RTE won't be drawn on Katy storyline despite Fair City fans' increasing impatience
