Fair City's killer revealed but it 'raises new questions, with more raised than answered'
After five nail-biting weeks of mystery and mayhem Karen's killer was revealed on last night's Fair City.
Several characters had been in the frame for the young woman's murder including Wayne, Oisin, Sean, and Orla but it was Kerri Ann who stabbed Karen to death.
Viewers on Thursday night saw a pregnant Kerri-Ann remove a loose skirting board only to reveal a transparent plastic bag containing a screwdriver.
It seems her jealousy over Decco threatening to go home with Karen was too much for her to bear and she stabbed her in the stomach.
Jenny Dixon, who plays Kerr-Ann, said was "very eerie" reading the script for the scene.
"As it’s a scene with minimal dialogue, the stage direction was more detailed than usual. The details and the writing of it are hauntingly tangible even before it gets to set to shoot it," she said.
Jenny says that even though her character has been outed to viewers as the killer, the revelation leads to even more questions.
"After this first reveal episode it raises new questions, with more raised than answered, it’s far from resolved. The episodes which follow will gradually unravel what and how exactly it all went down that fateful night," she says.
Speaking about what Kerri-Ann will do next, Jenny reveals that she will go into "maternal protection mode".
"She will act in a way she feels compelled to. Kerri-Ann is in a juxtaposed position of essentially being a completely moralistic and good character, duty- bound, yet also completely motivated by the desire for her happy family dream, her romance, her baby girl," she said.
"She will try to maintain her secret for the good of her baby who needs her mother and her father, the family around her. She is in maternal protection mode."
She still hopes to escape to Spain to start a new life with her family.
"She desperately wants to bring her baby girl into a world of peace and beauty and not one of hatred, violence and volatility. She is crying out for a fresh start, a new beginning," she adds.
The stress of keeping her horrible secret, however, will take its toll on Kerri-Ann's mental health in coming episodes.
Jenny adds, "Kerri-Ann is not sleeping or eating. She’s fixated on getting out of this and protecting her family. She spirals into obsessive thoughts and actions, cleaning the weapon multiple times, an obsession that won’t go away.
"She changes the hiding place several times. She’s in a place of extreme turmoil and her erratic behaviour is being noted."
