It must be one of the longest running dramatic storylines in soap history but despite fans' increasing annoyance, RTE is keeping schtum on when Katy will finally get ourra her box on Fair City.

She's been locked away courtesy of Ciaran for almost a year and after three failed escape attempts fans' patience is beginning to falter.

The online petition calling for the resolution of the Katy O'Brien storyline has almost 8,000 signatures of their 10,000 aim.

That's 8,000 people bothered enough by the never-ending saga to add their name to the list.  There may be many more out there...

Others have taken to social media to vent their fury over the storyline which stretches back to May 2016 and shows no sign of ending anytime soon.

Comments on Facebook on stories relating to Katy reveal the extent of their annoyance.

One writes, "do they not realise how fed up of this storyline we are? people shud actually boycot it and if they have no viewers they wont be long lettin her out" while another adds, "Ah ffs she's still n the box".

"Ah here........maybe in the Christmas Day episode!!" declares another viewer while another is a little more irate, "This is crap now no one cares anymore you dragged it out too long, we know who has her she's the suspense is gone it's silly".

You get the picture.

However, almost half a million viewers tune in to the soap for every episode, so despite claims from many fans that they are abandoning the show, it seems the audience is just as big as ever.

"We're very happy with how Fair City is performing right now and how invested our viewers are in the show," said a spokesperson for the soap.

"The Katy storyline has really captured people's imagination with speculation mounting as to how and when the storyline will to come to an end. This is reflected in the show's figures with close to half a million people watching every episode.

"We won't be commenting on the speculation of Katy's fate but encourage fans to stay tuned as the twists and turns of this dramatic storyline unfold."

So, with the promise of more "twists and turns" it seems the storyline may well have some steam left in it yet, much to fans' chagrin...
