Coronation Street actor Roy Barraclough, who played Alec Gilroy, has died aged 81
Former Coronation Street actor Roy Barraclough died today aged 81 after a short illness, his agent said.
Barraclough, who was born in Lancashire in England in 1935, was best known for his role as Alec Gilroy, landlord of the Rovers Return in the Manchester soap.
He appeared briefly in 1972 and 1975 but joined as a regular in 1986 when he married Bet Lynch (Julie Goodyear). He left the soap for good in 1998.
Throughout the seventies he had roles in series George and Mildred, Rising Damp, and The Lovers. He also teamed up with Les Dawson to play two older ladies Cissie and Ada.
He also had a long career in theatre including musical theatre with roles in The Boy Friend and Gypsy.
His last role was as Mr Granger in last year's remake of Are You Being Served?
In 2006 he was awarded an MBE for services to drama and to charity in the North West of England.
