Celebrity Big Brother contestant Angie Bowie does not yet know ex husband David Bowie is dead
David Bowie's ex-wife Angie will be told off-camera of his death 'at the first available opportunity', Channel 5 says
David Bowie's ex-wife Angie Bowie, currently a contestant on Celebrity Big Brother, does not yet know he is dead, Channel 5 said today.
Angie, who was married to the pop star from 1970 to 1980, will be told the tragic news of his death from cancer off-camera as soon as possible, the producers said.
Contestants on CBB have no contact with the outside world, but exceptions are made in the case of family emergencies or deaths.
There has already been speculation that Angie will leave the CBB house when she is told the news.
A Channel 5 spokesman said: “Following the very sad news of David Bowie's death this morning, we can confirm that Angie Bowie will be informed off camera today at the earliest opportunity. We will update further once this has taken place.”
Angie, 66, who was Bowie's manager when they got together, had not spoken to David for almost 40 years.
She said: "He hates me. I go to great lengths to avoid him."
When they divorced in 1980 David was awarded custody of their son Zowie, who later changed his name to Duncan Jones and is a successful film director with hits including Moon and Source Code.
Angie, an American who born in Cyprus and worked as a model and actress, met Bowie in London in 1969 when she was 19. They married at Bromley Register Office in 1970 but divorced in Switzerland ten years later.
Bowie wrote the songs The Prettiest Star, Golden Years and Cracked Actor about her, and later said of her: "She has as much insight into the human condition as a walnut and a self-interest that would make Narcissus green with envy."
