'Blind dates? You must be joking' - First Dates Ireland host Mateo (32) has no interest
He may be the host of First Dates Ireland, but Mateo Saina has said he would only go on a blind date as a joke.
The reality TV series has won over the hearts of the viewing public, with its first series drawing in massive ratings. The show is set to return later this year with 12-episodes.
However, Mateo (32) has admitted even if he was not the host of First Dates, he would not have any interest in auditioning for a date.
"No. I prefer old fashioned [dating]. I see somebody in front of me and we have a drink and so on," he told the Herald.
"Blind dates? Maybe just as a joke. I wouldn't put my hopes into it."
Like any reality series, some suspect that many of the daters on the show may really only be after their 15 minutes of fame, but Mateo remains optimistic that their intentions are pure.
"I would like to believe they are. Nobody can claim they're not because they're not going to say that to us," he said.
"I really hope they are because that's what it's made for, to find love."
While the first series failed to produce a lasting relationship, the TV host hopes they will have better luck this time around.
"Hopefully, we will have more success with season two and find somebody hooking up for long-term," he said.
The series, which is filmed in Dublin's Gibson Hotel, shoots over the course of one week.
Mateo said the schedule was quite intense, with the cast and crew often having gruelling 12-hour days.
"We film for seven days in a row. It's hardcore," he said.
"It's work, but it's not work. You're looking at people and their facial expressions and the drama, it's cool."
The Croat works in Marselles on Merrion Row and said he is more alert at work since being on TV.
"You have to be more aware of what you say and what you're doing," he said.
