An Australian politician has revealed that he laughed so hard at an episode of Veep, he ended up knocking himself out.

Graham Perrett was eating sushi at the time and his intense burst of laughter led to him choking and knocking himself out against a kitchen top.

He is now sporting a black eye and stitches.

Speaking to BBC 5 Live he said, "It is a pretty funny show. Some rice went down my airway and I started coughing and choking and laughing at the same time," he said.

"I ran out of the room, I think I hit a wall and then the kitchen island with a granite top. My wife came in and I was on the floor. I was knocked out for a second or so and there was blood everywhere.

"She took me up the hospital. I was in a lot of pain but I was laughing as well. It was just one of those bizarre accidents."

The story was first shared by The Australian newspaper.

Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus tweeted her reaction to the news: "Well, thank you very much. Take good care of yourself and for God's sakes - be careful!"

She later tweeted, "I mean, c'mon, I'm actually having a hard time believing it.  But the real question is - what episode."
