American Idol wraps after 14 years, and the final ever winner is...
After 14 years and a revolving door of judges, American Idol has finally bowed out.
The final ever champion of the Fox series was Trent Harmon who beat La'Porsha Renae to the title after Dalton Rappattoni had been voted off the previous night.
Harmon, 25, had been working as a waiter at his family's restaurant before auditioning for the show. He grew up on a farm and described himself as a "dude from Mississippi", from the town of Amory.
Harmon, whose versatile voice won over viewers, said on Wednesday's show that his persistence made him believe he had a chance at winning.
The 22-year-old runner-up, Renae, is a single mother who overcame domestic abuse to compete. She is also from Mississippi.
However, the win was almost overshadowed by everything else that was going on, as Simon Cowell brought back original judges Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul for the show.
US President Barack Obama even took time out to open the show, although while he asked people to vote on Idol he also reminded them to register to vote in the election.
Current judges Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez both performed. Keith was joinedon stage by former winner Carrie Underwood while the first winner, Kelly Clarkson, pre-recorded a performance because she's due to give birth.
American Idol, once a ratings powerhouse which influenced TV and music, had seen viewing figures steadily declining before Fox decided it would end this season.
