American Idol, the US version of the long-extinct Pop Idol, will finally come to an end after its 15th season next year.

Fox today announced that American Idol XV will continue as usual in January 2016 with judges Jennifer Lopez, Keither Urban and Harry Connick Jr. and presenter Ryan Seacrest still on board.

The final season will apparently pay tribute to the previous 14, although it's unclear exactly what that means.

However, it will be the last season as the TV show has been losing viewers since its peak in 2006 when 36m tuned in for the finale.

It was the number one show on US television for eight years from 2002 but ratings have since taken a slide.

Even so the show survived the attack from X Factor when Simon Cowell launched the rival music talent show in 2011, claiming it would easily draw 20m viewers and beat Idol in the ratings.

X Factor was cancelled after just three seasons when it failed to live up to expectations and Cowell ducked back to the UK to head up the X Factor panel on his home turf.

The demise of Idol may well open the door for an X Factor return.

Is Nick Grimshaw being lined up as Louis Walsh's X Factor replacement?
