Alan Cantwell is returning to TV3 after a three year break to front the main evening TV3 News at 8.

Alan will take up his post from next Wednesday October 28 and will also be part of TV3's election coverage.

Former Midday presenter Colette Fitzpatrick anchored the programme when it launched in March but Alan will replace most recent anchor Ruairi Carroll who will become a senior news reporter.

Alan was one of TV3’s first employees when the station launched in 1998 and worked with the news team as a station anchor until 2012 when he decided to take a break and work on a number of different external projects.

“It’s great to be back with TV3 News, particularly to be part of the main evening news at 8pm," he said.

"I’m looking forward to covering the general election and witnessing the next phase of TV3’s evolution under the ownership of Virgin Media.”

TV3 Group Director of News and Public Affairs, Andrew Hanlon, said: “I am delighted that Alan has decided to come back to TV3. He is a highly experienced newsman who brings a wealth of current affairs knowledge and on-screen presence to our increasingly popular nightly news broadcast.”
