Sunday nights are about to get a little bit steamier as Poldark is set to return to our screens next month.

The BBC has just released the first teaser trailer for the second season of the hit period drama, which shows hero Ross Poldark in chains.

The show was met with huge success last year after viewers fell in love with the emotional story lines, stunning Cornwall landscapes and, of course, the gratuitous shots of Irish actor Aidan Turner’s naked torso.

The 30-second clip doesn’t give much away, as we hear Poldark say in a brooding voiceover: “I fought for our liberty, for our hopes, for our dreams. And I’ll keep on fighting, whatever the cost.”

This season will adapt the third and fourth novels in Winston Graham’s series, but is set to cut a brutal scene in which Poldark rapes his ex-lover Elizabeth.

Turner said the show will deviate from the source material to present a sex scene that “seems consensual”.

“It just seems right. He goes to talk. He doesn’t go to commit a crime,” he told the Sun.

“They talk and it seems like there is still this spark between them, this unfinished business emotionally.

“Certainly, that’s how Ross feels. He doesn’t force himself upon her.”

In a statement, the producers of the show, Mammoth Screen, addressed the controversy: “Winston Graham’s version of events is open to interpretation. Ours is not. Many fans haven’t read the books and don’t appreciate spoilers, so we invite all viewers to watch the episode when it comes out and then make up their own mind.”

The second season will premiere on BBC One on September 4.
