The main 'Game of Thrones' actors are set to break records by being paid up to £2m (€2.3m) per episode for the new season.

Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau are reported to have signed record-breaking new deals. The HBO show, which is mostly filmed in Northern Ireland, has become a global smash hit since it debuted on the small screen in 2011.

The seventh series of the fantasy drama returns to UK screens on July 17, with one more planned after that.

'Game of Thrones' has showcased some stunning scenery, including the north coast and rural Co Down, to a worldwide audience. Much of the indoor filming is done at Paint Hall Studios in Belfast's Titanic Quarter.

The new contracts signed by the top five stars contain bonus clauses based on percentages of syndication payments received from more than 170 countries in which the series is broadcast. The five are set to benefit enormously from repeats, especially in the US, where the show averaged a record-breaking 23 million viewers per episode last season.
