Revealed: BBC announce the next star of Dr Who... and it's a woman
Broadchurch star Jodie Whittaker will be the thirteenth person to take on the role of Dr Who, it has been revealed.
She is the first actress to take on the role, which has traditionally been played by male leads including David Tennant and Matt Smith.
Whittaker was revealed as the latest star during a trailer following the Wimbleton men's final on Sunday.
Earlier this week, bookies dubbed the actress, who plays Beth Latimer in the hit ITV drama, joint favourites with Death in Paradise star Kris Marshall to land the role.
The actress will follow British actor Peter Capaldi who took up the famous role in 2013, and will leave Dr Who behind in this year's Christmas special.
Wittaker will make her debut as the time-travelling doctor during the Christmas period.
