Fair City fans may have thought they'd never see the day when Katy finally broke free from Ciaran's grimy garage, but rumour has it there might be a resolution to the seemingly never-ending storyline this Sunday.

It's been a whole year since poor Katy was nabbed by her revenge-driven captor and while she might be dreaming of the Carrigstown sunshine on her face, she will certainly be emerging into a different world than the one she left abruptly (if she ever does manage to break down that bloody door).

From President Trump's shocking election to Ireland's unexpected success at the Euros, it will take a few sessions in McCoy's before Katy has caught up with the disturbing world as we know it.

Set to mark the anniversary of her kidnap in captivity with only a DVD player to keep her entertained, here are a few of the things Katy has missed since she was locked up by that psycho last May.

Robbie Brady's 84th minute goal against Italy

Considering that Katy is locked up in a garage in a heavily populated area of Dublin, she may have been able to hear the thrilled roars from the local as a goal from Robbie Brady brought Ireland through to the knockout stages of the Euros last June.

Having spent last summer twiddling her thumbs in the garage, Katy will be devastated to discover she missed out on those hope-filled pub sessions when we believed we might actually have a shot.

The #heatwave

It was tops off last July as the nation enjoyed temperatures of 30°C for the first time in almost two decades. Katy, the misfortune, must have been absolutely boiling in her prison cell and dreaming of the rest of us milling into 99s and roasting ourselves raw on Dollymount.

Having missed out on the sunnier weather earlier this week, Katy certainly won't be topping up her much needed Vitamin D levels with the grey clouds anticipated this weekend.

'Pull like a dog'

August 12, 2016: Olympic heroes! The O'Donovan brothers Paul and Gary do the country proud with a silver medal... and get the nation laughing with their clever quips

Katy might be wondering why all her Carrigstown friends have a new vested interest in rowing since she saw them last, as she was banged up during the O'Donovan's historical silver medal win last August. The nation fell swiftly in love with the boys from Skibbereen but Katy wouldn't know them from Adam thanks to dastardly Ciaran.

No more Brangelina

Will Katy take the news of Brad and Angelina's dramatic split as tough as we did? What about the kids?

Creepy Clown Phase

It's true that Katy probably didn't need anymore drama in her life last October, so perhaps she was better off missing out on this disturbing pre-Halloween trend that gripped the world.

Dozens of stories emerged internationally as pranksters donned sinister clown costumes and terrorised locals for fun, which was frightening to say the least. The upsetting trend even impacted North Dublin, when a band of clowns carrying chainsaws sauntered into a local school to ask for directions causing chaos.

President Trump

As the rest of the world peered at their phones open-mouthed on November 9, 2017, Katy was blissfully ignorant of the fact that the US was now in the hands of Donald Trump and not Hilary Clinton as anticipated.

While the world has yet to implode, the future is not looking so bright as Trump remains at the beginning of his four year term as President.

The only positive that poor Katy can take from this is that she probably hasn't seen Melissa McCarthy's SNL impersonation of Sean Spicer, which might cheer her up just a small bit.

The Late Late Toy Show

The depth of Ciaran's cruelty really showed when the lunatic didn't let Katy out to watch the annual Toy Show, one of the ultimate highlights of the Christmas season.

She can probably catch up on the RTE player, but she must have been devastated to have missed her night on the couch with the family.

Goodbye George

Former Wham! star George Michael died aged 53 on Christmas Day

Wham fans had their hearts broken on Christmas Day when news emerged of George Michael's death. Hopefully Katy wasn't a big fan because that news might be a hard pill to swallow if she ever emerges (we're skeptical).

Twins for Bey

Beyonce announces she is pregnant with twins in style

Katy's the only human on earth not to have seen photos of Beyonce's pregnancy announcement an estimated 786 million times. The singer let the world know that she was expecting twins in a revealing photograph in February, which will probably come as a big news to Katy in captivity.

In her box room, Katy could sure have done with a pick me up in March, when a video of Professor Robert Kelly went viral. The professor was interrupted by his mischievous children Marion and James as he spoke live to BBC news from his home in Korea. After a year of torture in Ciaran's garage, this is the first thing the guards should show her when she gets out!

Local gossip

Tommy and Debbie share a passionate kiss in Fair City.

It's not been all sunshine and roses in Carrigstown since Katy has been locked up, and residents have gotten up to some pretty questionable antics while she's been away.

Local businessman Paul certainly hasn't used his time to help search parties looking for the missing woman, and instead has been doing the dirt left, right and centre throughout the last year cumulating in a explosive stand off with his wife Niamh last month.

Carol has had a tough time of it too, forced to wed her fiancé with a giant black eye thanks to her baddie dad Trigger last August.

Meanwhile, after discovering the sordid details of her mum Debbie's affair with Tommy, Katy will be absolutely raging the pair are still going strong. During her darkest days Katy was probably dreaming that the stress of her abduction might at least spilt them apart. However, it seems on top of the trauma already inflicted upon her, Katy will have to get used to an annoying step-dad too this summer.
