Danger! Amanda at Work, Thursday, TV3, 9pm

Amanda Brunker rolls up her sleeves

What would you be prepared to do as the star of your own reality show? In this new four-part adventure, author and journalist Amanda Brunker is prepared for plenty as she abandons the glamour and dons the work duds to take on some of the toughest occupations in Ireland.

Her tasks in future episodes will include working on a busy construction site and trying her hand at pig farming, but this week Ms. Brunker turns up on Howth harbour at dawn armed only with a sou'wester and a smile.

She is joining the crew of the Dearbhla, a 23-metre trawler that ventures up to 100 miles off the north Dublin coast out into the choppy waters of the Irish Sea to fish mainly for prawns. That means long days at sea, often in rough weather, and with this Amanda will have to handle some serious sleep deprivation, snatching just a couple of hours of sleep a day. She'll also be learning to cope with plain food as well as boat's constant movements.

Sounds like even less fun than your average PR function, and the hardship won't stop there, because Amanda will spend a week on the Dearbhla, hauling nets, gutting fish and working night and day on a slippery deck. And the very best of luck to her.

Norah Casey’s Traveller Academy

Thursday, RTÉ2, 9pm

A go-getting reality show

Former Dragon’s Den judge Norah Casey began her working life at 16 selling continental quilts for a boss who happened to be a Traveller. And in this new reality show she’s come full circle in a sense, as she sets out to mentor four young Traveller women hoping to start their own businesses. They all have ideas that might just turn into viable businesses, and Norah wants to offer them the access and insights that will make it happen.

Better Call Saul

Netflix, February

A spin-off with big shoes to fill

Breaking Bad fans are counting down the days till this sequel of sorts finally gets released. Bob Odenkirk will reprise his role as Walter White’s lawyer, Saul Goodman, a strip mall shyster with dubious underworld connections. Saul was one of the most winning supporting characters on the show, and in this comic prequel we’ll find out how Saul became Saul in the first place. And with a past that includes a string of wives and wrong-doing, Better Caul Saul is unlikely to be dull.

True Detective, season 2

Sky Atlantic, summer

Colin Farrell will star in the second run

Adored by critics, season one of True Detective turned crime thriller conventions on their head, and starred Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as Louisiana cops whose lives are destroyed by a particularly harrowing case. Season two will feature an all-new cast headed by Colin Farrell, who’ll play Ray Velcoro, one of three rural Californian police officers who get into deep water while investigating a murder. Vince Vaughn, Taylor Kitsch and Rachel McAdams will co-star.
