The producers of The Great Irish Bake Off were forced to call paramedics after they became concerned about the health of one of the show's contestants.

Baker Ailish Carrigan from Co. Laois fell ill during a technical challenge as the pressure of a coffee-cake bake became overwhelming.

Presenter Anna Nolan became concerned about the 41-year-old when her first attempt at the cake failed and asked Ailish if she was "okay".

“I’m making a mess and I’m under a bit of pressure to be honest," said Ailish.

"I couldn’t get the butter to dissolve properly, it was so hard, it must have been straight from the fridge so I had to start all over again. I would have liked to been further at this stage”.

Anna tried her best to calm a stressed-out Ailish down by asking her to take a few deep breaths.

Shortly after, Ailish abandoned her cake and left the tent as she felt faint, which is when producers became concerned.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the show, which is filmed in Tinakilly House, Co. Wicklow.

Later in the episode, Anna was forced to be the bearer of bad news and announced to the other contestants that Ailish would not be returning to the show.

Judges Paul Kelly and Lilly Higgins were left disappointed at the quality of this week's bakes and revealed that two contestants were very close to getting the chop.

However, following Ailish's departure the judges decided not to eliminate anyone from the competition this week.

Speaking of star baker Clare, Lilly Higgins said: “I was really delighted with Clare's winning bakes. She really showed today what the show is all about. It’s about amateur baking achieving professional standards.”
