He's been practising some pretty spicy jokes, mainly focused around the #OscarSoWhite controversy.

Chris Rock cut a sharp figure in a white blazer and came out to rapturous applause.

"Man I counted at least 15 black people on that montage!" he said as he entered, setting the tone.

"Welcome to the Academy Awards, otherwise known as the white people's choice awards! You know, if they nominated presenters, I wouldn't get this job!"

He said why he didn't boycott - "How come all these unemployed people tell you to quit things!"

The comedian and actor spoke out against the boycott - in a jovial manner.

"Why are we protesting this Oscars? It's the 88th Academy Awards, which means this whole 'no black nominees' thing has happened at least 71 other times."

He said black people didn't protest before because they had "real things to protest at the time. They were too busy being raped and lynched to care about who wins best cinematographer."

"What happened this year? People went mad! Everybody went mad!"

Brie Larson almost cried with laughter at Chris Rock's jokes.

"This year in the In Memoriam package, it is going to feature black people who were shot by the cops on the way to the movies!"

"If you want black nominees every year, you need to have black categories. You already do it with men and women, think about it! There's no real reason for there to be a men and a women category in acting! It's not track and field! You don't have to separate them!"

He then opened up about Hollywood racism. "Is Hollywood racist? You're damn right it's racist! Hollywood is sorority racist - We like you Rhonda, but you're not a Kappa!"

"Things are changing, we've got a black Rocky this year!And this is outstanding because Rocky takes place in a world where white athletes are as good as black athletes - it's a science fiction movie!"

He suggested "Best black friend" as a category for an Oscar.

Rock then got serious: "It's not about boycotting, we just want more opportunities. Leo gets a great part every year, all of you guys get great parts all the time. What about the black actors?"

Rock has a reputation as a controversialist, after a Saturday Night Live appearance in 2014 where he made jokes about the Boston Marathon bombings and 9/11. He immediately started trending on social media, with users saying that he shouldn't be making light of such serious matter.
