Bryan Dobson has spoken about the pay disparity between himself and Sharon Ní Bheoláin on RTE Six One news.

It emerged during the summer that Ní Bheoláin was being paid between €60,000 and €80,000 less than her co-anchor.

But Dobson insisted he didn't know there was a difference in their pay until it was made public and he sees no reason why it should be the case.

"I don't decide what I get paid. First, I didn't know what Sharon earned until it was published," he told the RTE Guide.

"And I certainly don't see any justification for the disparity between what we earn."

Dobson announced last month that he will be leaving Six One at the end of October to join radio show Morning Ireland.

The Dubliner said he is looking forward to trying something new.

"The great thing now is that I get a change of direction but it's still in RTE so not as daunting," he said.

"It's a challenge and I need it. I've just turned 57 and a lot of my friends are thinking of retiring or making room for the next generation.

"The mid fifties is an interesting stage and this is an ideal time for a new opportunity."
