From electrocution to ecstasy - the most dramatic Fair City exits ever
As Niamh Brennan gears up for her exit from Fair City with a 'surprise twist' we're looking back at some of the most dramatic character exits in Carrigstown's history...
Most of the characters who have departed Fair City simply packed their bags and moved to Cork, Manchester, Mullingar, the UK, or even as far afield as South Africa and South America, leaving McCoy's door open for a future return.
However, others have met their demise in dramatic ways whether it's death by electrocution, ecstasy pill, fire or good-old fashioned bloody murder.
Here are some of the most memorable exits in the soap's history...
Annette Daly (played by Rebecca Smith) was Carrigstown's resident alcoholic solicitor. She was engaged to Barry O'Hanlon but had a fling with Barry's boss Seamus. She died in a fire in 2009. Her partner Bill died in hospital after the same fire, but not before admitting that he had kept Annette and Seamus captive and had deliberately started the fire himself.
Businessman Mike Gleeson (Seamus Moran) owned The Bistro in Carrigstown and that's where he met a grisly end in 2008 - by electrocution, thanks to some loose wires. Everyone at home gave their electrics the once over after that one.
Poor Sarah O'Leary (Gemma Doorly) was killed by her friend Barry O'Hanlon in a freak accident in 2011. It was witnessed by bad boy Denzo and both he and Barry came up with a plan to get rid of Sarah's corpse. However, Barry was tracked down and did time for his dastardly deed.
Back in 2003 there were truly harrowing scenes as Tess Halpin (Sabina Brennan), a long time victim of domestic abuse, was strangled to death by her husband Marty (Paul Lee). Marty went on to take his own life.
Dolores' daughter Lorraine Molloy (Maeve McGrath) was tragically killed off screen by a hurricane in Florida while she was on her honeymoon. Creating a hurricane on the small screen was probably beyond the Fair City budget at the time.
Poor old Dolores. Her other daughter, Jessica, ate an ecstasy pill she found on the floor when a night of babysitting went wrong. She was just three and she overdosed. Back in 2005 it was a horrifying storyline that terrified parents nationwide.
Mechanic and former lover of Niamh, Michael, O'Brien was accidentally killed by his dad after he shoved him out of the way and he banged his head. He suffered a brain hemorrhage and died suddenly.
Gangster Billy Meehan was battered to death - with a golf club - by Lorcan Foley, the son of his wife Carol - in 2001. Lorcan killed him in order to protect his mother, who was planning to leave him. Carol and taxi man Leo (who had already beaten Billy to near-death) helped Carol to dispose f the body. Leo was eventually convicted of his murder.
Much-loved regular Christy Phelan died a lonely death in heartbreaking scenes when he had a heart attack at home in 2014, shortly after suffering a stroke. He was being watched over by his son-in-law Max and although Christy called out for help, Max froze and failed to intervene, before fleeing the house. Tragic.
The villainous Paddy Bishop (Andrew Connolly) met his end when was fatally stabbed in a scuffle with his daughter Charlotte in 2013. It was pretty brutal viewing.
A car crash claimed the life of Helen Doyle in 1998...
And in 2007 Gina Cassidy was also killed in a crash, on her wedding day. She was killed by Barry O'Hanlon outside the church on Ray's motorbike.
