From Carrigstown captors to double wedding woes: Seven shocking Fair City story lines that had us hooked in 2016
From kidnappers to risqué affairs, it has been another dramatic year in Carrigstown. Here are some of the most dramatic story lines of 2016 that had us reaching for the popcorn.
When Heather ACTUALLY drugged her daughter Ellie to flirt with Hughie
Just when you thought Fair City’s Heather couldn’t sink any lower she did just that during the New Year’s Day episode of the soap when she drugged her daughter Ellie in an effort to hinder her recovery from appendicitis.
The dastardly mum was keen to spend alone time with Renee’s brother-in-law Hughie and spiked Ellie's Mi Wadi with a sleeping tablet, knocking her out for the count.
When Tommy Dillon and Debbie O’Brien got it on
Other men’s wives are not off limits for Tommy Dillon, who embarked on an affair with Debbie O’Brien earlier this year, rocking her marriage to taxi driver Eoghan.
Still grieving after the loss of her son Michael, Debbie found a comfort in lusty Tommy, which took them right to the bedroom.
Fellow resident Dermot Fahey, who himself was left heartbroken five years ago when Tommy stole his wife Jo, became suspect to the affair and Debbie eventually called quits on her marriage to Eoghan.
When Carol opened up about her abusive childhood
Actress Aisling O’Neill was commended by viewers this year for her powerful performance in a child abuse storyline involving her character Carol Meehan.
Long-term Carrigstown resident Carol was forced to confront her past after her dad Trigger Foley arrived back in town, prompting her to open up to her fiancé Robbie in one of the soap’s most harrowing scenes.
Carol went on to tell her fiancé about being sexually abused by her father’s friend ‘Uncle Mika Hendricks’ when she was just 11 years old.
When Dermot was diagnosed with terminal cancer
Fair City fans were left heartbroken when Dermot Fahey, played by actor Seamus Power, was told his cancerous tumours were inoperable during the summer. Teary-eyed fans sadly watched the businessman tell his young son Ben of his terminal diagnosis in an episode on Tuesday, in scenes that pulled at the heart-strings. Will this Christmas be the last for one of the soap’s most long standing residents?
When Katie’s captor was FINALLY revealed
In a story clearly inspired by Emma Donoghue’s Room, Fair City fans could not wait to see who had locked Katy away in a garden shed, fully equipped with expensive CCTV gear. Was it Tommy Dillon or Gangster Cathal Spillane? Script writers even had us suspecting Charlie Kelly! Eventually Ciaran was revealed to be the mastermind behind the whole sorry story. Still locked up, it’s unclear whether or not poor Katy will be out of the shed in time to celebrate the New Year.
When Carol’s dad Trigger hit her before walking down the aisle
It was violent scenes at Carol and Robbie’s wedding in August as the troubled bride walked down the aisle with a shiner, thanks to her estranged father Trigger.
Already in her dress and veil, Trigger resorted to physical violence ahead of the double wedding, which also saw Kerrie Ann and Deco tie the knot.
With a bleeding nose, Carol managed to limp down the aisle to marry her love. Later, Robbie was quick to turf Trigger out on his ear before the wedding guests sat down to a celebratory dinner.
When Paul Brennan still hasn't learned his lesson
It seems love rat Paul will never learn and is continuing his affair with Hayley throughout the Christmas period as his wife Niamh secretly plots his downfall. Even an uncomfortable Christmas dinner with Niamh, Hayley and also his ex-wife Nicola couldn't put a stop to his playing away. As Paul continues to fool around with Hayley, Niamh is planning an escape to Spain with his fortune. However, the mission might prove unsuccessful as Nicola discovered Niamh’s travel documents on Christmas day, and potentially may foil her plan.
