TV3’s series ‘Paramedics’ comes to a finale this week with a particularly emotional episode.
Fly-on-the-wall show Paramedics goes behind the scenes with the HSE National Ambulance Service giving viewers a glimpse into the action with the emergency medical service.
After five riveting episodes, this week sees the emotive final days in the life of terminally ill patient Jim Lucey.
The episode follows Emergency Medical Technicians Des O’Halloran and Peter Lane as they care for Lucey and help ease the stress and heartache of his wife Ber.
Shortly after filming, Jim tragically passed away. Ber praised the work of O’Halloran and Lane saying, “It’s sad when they die but to see the lovely peace, it was wonderful. I hadn’t seen him look like that for such a long time.”
The widow added, “It’s terrible lonesome without him, terrible lonesome but I was surrounded by help and kindness and that made a huge difference.”
In Thursday night’s episode, viewers also get to share the elation of some of the happier moments that the paramedics witness every day
Emergency Call Taker Joey Murphy is at the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) responding to a call where a woman has gone into labour.
Joey speaks to the expecting mother’s sister, who made the call, keeping her calm and telling her what to do until the ambulance arrives.
“Childbirths and pregnancies can be brilliant in the sense that you’re helping bring another life into this world,” Joey said. “These people are happy ringing an ambulance because generally it’s the mother, brother, sister, boyfriend or husband, it’s not the patients themselves.”
‘Paramedics’ episode 6 airs Thursday 21st May at 9pm on TV3.
