Cathy Belton: ‘I was about to leave Ireland but Red Rock kept me here'
Red Rock star Cathy Belton has revealed that she was on the verge of emigrating before she landed a role in the TV3 soap.
The well-known theatre actress was planning on relocating across the Irish Sea before the part of Patricia Hennessy came along.
“Just before I got Red Rock, I was planning on moving to London,” she said.
“I had been optioned for a TV series on Channel 4 but I think the universe just points you back where you’re meant to be.
“I’m delighted I stayed, it’s been a great year here in Dublin,” she added.
The Galway native has had a bumper year and said she’s delighted she didn’t relocate to the big smoke.
“Personally as well, my relationship is here,” she said.
“I also did my first one-woman show, a play, which was the biggest thing I’ve ever done in theatre.
“It was a Frank McGuinness play called The Matchbox so between that and Red Rock it was a big year.
“I feel it’s been one of the best years I’ve had both professionally and personally,” she added.
Speaking to TV Now magazine, Belton said she relishes playing tough nut Patricia because it allows her to get her frustrations out through her character.
“I come home like the most pleasant woman in Ireland. I get out all my darkness, all my crankiness with Patricia,” she said.
There’s a lot in store for Patricia next year and Belton said “it’s all kind of starting to fall apart for her”.
“There’s another big shock about to hit the Hennessys that will have dire consequences for the whole family.
“For me as an actor, it’s interesting to see a character under so much pressure,” she added.
