Awkward moment on First Dates Ireland as Dubliner Amy offered to pay half but was miffed when date agreed
The First Dates Ireland restaurant is throwing open its doors tonight for the show's third series - and Dubliner Amy McLaughlin is one of the daters looking for love.
The Lucan woman (32) applied for the show to find "the love of [her] life" and although she had a great time on her date, things got a little awkward when it came to the question of who would pay the bill.
Amy's date Ben O'Nolan (30), from England, offered to cover the meal before Amy said she would pay her half.
However, when he agreed to this she wasn't too happy.
"I think that a man should pay for the first date. I'm old-fashioned," Amy said.
"I've no problem spending my own money and I'll buy anything for the remainder of the time we are seeing each other.
"But for the first date, I think the guy should pay."
However, both Amy and Ben enjoyed their date.
"It was actually my cousin who applied for me. It was good fun," Ben said.
Amy had also applied to be a contestant on TV3's rival series Blind Date and was glad she made the decision to go on First Dates instead, where she felt she would have more of a chance to be herself.
"I had actually forgotten about First Dates and I was meant to go to Blind Date but then First Dates rang me so I jumped at it," she told the Herald.
"You're able to be yourself more, whereas Blind Date is more for fun.
"It was brilliant. It was fun from the start to the finish. I actually wasn't nervous.
"I think the few wines I had beforehand helped and I was just so excited."
Things get even more awkward for daters Leigh and Samuel on tonight's episode when they have what is likely the worst date ever to feature on the show.
Samuel tells Leigh he's slightly "infatuated" with himself and they both struggle to stay at the table and finish their date. Leigh tells his pal Niamh, who is also on a date, "I hate him so much." Side note: Samuel's celebrity crush is Leo Varadkar.
Tonight's episode also features Jackie, in a head-turning dress, on a date with Joey and fashion blogger Lawson arrives dressed to impress for his date.
First Dates Ireland airs tonight on RTE2 at 9.30pm
