'And here is the news at 8pm on TV3'
TV3 have shown they are intent on taking on rivals RTE and UTV in the news viewing stakes after announcing a new main evening bulletin.
Starting next week, the new nightly news show will be a half-hour long and broadcast at 8pm - an hour before RTE's main news programme.
News anchor Colette Fitzpatrick will take the seat for the new show, starting next Monday which will be made up of a mix of national, international, business, sports and weather news.
TV3 Group Director of News & Public Affairs Programming, Andrew Hanlon (inset), said that the new flagship news programme, along with a host of new shows introduced by the channel this year, is part of the "evolution" of the station.
"For many people, catching the early evening news just isn't an option as they are still travelling home from work," he said.
"The introduction of TV3 News at 8 forms part of the evolution of TV3's overall new schedule of programmes."
The schedule of its other news broadcasts will remain the same with TV3 News at 5.30 and the TV3 News at 12.30 as well as news bulletins on Ireland AM and Tonight with Vincent Browne at 11pm.
TV3 said the reason behind the 8pm broadcast is to follow its European counterparts.
"With commuting times becoming longer, and a greater availability of audience in the early peak viewing time, TV3 has chosen the 8pm broadcast slot to provide its viewers with an alternative news time which is the norm throughout continental Europe," a spokesman said.
