RTE has confirmed that the most recent episode had one of the highest viewing statistics in the drama’s history.
Last night’s fifth episode had an average of 962,000 viewers- 90,000 more viewers than watched Series 4, Episode 5 last year.
The opening episode of Series 5 attracted a massive audience of 976,400, as a central character was killed off in a dramatic twist.
Viewers dropped by almost 125,000 last weekend, but RTE has attributed this to the Bank Holiday weekend.
Head of Drama for RTÉ Jane Gogan says the astounding figures are a “testament to the immense creative talent and professionalism of the series’ writer, producers, director and crew and a magnificent cast of actors. “
She added that the increasing viewers is particularly astounding, as audience numbers in general are in decline.
The consolidated average viewers for Series 5 tops one million viewers.
