Thursday sees the return to the Half Moon Theatre in the Cork Opera House of the Cork Cine Club, a 10-week series of the screenings of the best in current world cinema, which should act as a nice lead-in to the Cork Film Festival in November.
The opening screening on Thursday is Japanese director Yojiro Takita's Departures, the winner of last year's Oscar for best foreign film. Inspired by the memoir Coffinman, it tells the story of a concert cellist turned mortician -- out of work, he replies to a job ad at a company called Departures, thinking it's a travel agency...
This is followed on October 14 by the Oscar-shortlisted documentary Mugabe and the White African. Tickets are €10, with a five-film package deal of €45. www.corkoperahouse.ie
