'They can call me fat, ugly or a culchie mucker from Carlow - I just don't care' - Kathryn Thomas speaks to Paul Williams
As the no-nonsense presenter of Ireland's most popular weight-loss show, Kathryn Thomas has as much time for fear as she does for "small-minded eejits". That is, none.
As perhaps the last RTE star standing on social media, the Carlow native (37) has learned to brush off abusive criticism as well as anyone - insisting that after 15 years in the limelight, it doesn't affect her.
"It doesn't bother me now, they can call me fat, they can call me old, they can call me ugly, they can even say get off the screen you culchie mucker from Carlow - this happens a lot unsurprisingly - but I don't care," she says.
"Everything they say just makes me laugh at this point. I think there's so much crap on social media, everyone is vilified."
Speaking on the Paul Williams Podcast for Independent.ie, the travel host-turned fitness guru-turned businesswomen says online trolls are only interested in tearing down the world around them.
"I think anyone perceived to be anyway successful or confident is enough fuel for some of these small-minded eejits to feel that they can have a go anonymously," Kathryn says.
"I have a Facebook account but I'm not active on it. I'm on Twitter though and I get trolled mightily, all the time I get abuse.
"Let them say what they want; they're the only ones paying attention to their vileness."
