RTE leads winners at IMRO Radio Awards 2017 with eight gold awards

RTE leads the list of winners of this year's IMRO Radio Awards with eight awards, including Full Service Station of the Year for RTE Radio 1 and Music Station of the Year for RTE Lyric FM.

The awards, formerly the PPI Radio Awards, were announced on Friday night at a gala ceremony at the Lyrath Estate Hotel in Kilkenny.

Over 600 guests including the biggest names in radio attended as host DJ and comedian Dermot Whelan revealed the winners from a shortlist of 185.

Ninety judges deliberated over 677 entries and listened to over 295 hours of radio from across Ireland.

As well as Full Service Station of the Year and Music Station of the Year for RTE Radio 1 and RTE Lyric FM respectively, RTE also won the gold Innovation award for Liveline 1917 on RTE Radio 1.

Sideline Productions for RTE Radio 1 bagged Comedy Programme for Colm O'Regan Wants A Word while Craoltoireacht le Gaeilge went to RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta for Cormac ag a Cúig.

RTE Radio 1 also won Drama gold for I Seek Refuge, Magazine Programme for The Ray D'Arcy Show, and Documentary/Feature for Documentary on One: No Time To Lose.

The BBC won seven awards while Newstalk earned six including Sports Broadcaster (Ger Gilroy), Sports Programme (Off the Ball), and News Broadcaster (Sarah McInerney).

The station also bagged awards for Specialist Speech Programme for Living with Locked-in Syndrome and Short Feature which was awarded to The Pat Kenny Show for A History of Scandal in the Catholic Church.

The Neil Prendeville Show: Breaking the Silence won Interactive Speech Programme for Red FM.  The Cork station also won On-Air Competitions/Promotions fore their The Chosen One competition.
