Broadcaster Newstalk has named Tim Collins as its incoming chief executive.

He is due to take up the post on January 4.

A qualified doctor and barrister, Mr Collins worked at RTE in the late 1980s before becoming a political advisor, and later Head of Public Affairs and Project Management at Drury Communications.

Former Newstalk chief executive Gerard Whelan stepped down earlier this year to pursue other interests.

The appointment of the current chief of Ocean FM to the top spot at Communicorp-owned Newstalk is subject to regulatory sign off. As well as being a founding executive at Ocean FM, Mr Collins has been a long-standing director of the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland.
