Muireann O'Connell is set to take over from Al Porter after Today FM confirmed she is the new host of their lunchtime slot.

Comedian Porter (24) had hosted the midday until 2.30pm slot since February 2017 before he departed the station in November amid allegations of inappropriate behaviour.

O'Connell is no stranger to Today FM and has filled in for other presenters including Fergal D'Arcy and Ian Dempsey in the past while she also hosts the station's 'Saturday Hits' show every week.

As a result of the move, Fergal D'Arcy's show will gain an extra half hour, running from 2pm to 4.30pm.

The station has promised O'Connell's new programme will be a "two-hour music and listener-driven show" which she will begin hosting on Monday, January 22. It will run from 12pm to 2pm.

In May 2017, the radio host was announced as the full time co-host of the 'Six O'Clock Show' on TV3 after weeks of being a fill-in presenter. She will remain as a presenter on the show.

She replaced co-host Lucy Kennedy who did not return to the series after her maternity leave, instead choosing to focus on presenting 'Ireland's Got Talent'.
