Mairead Ronan has announced she is leaving Today FM after 15 years with the station.

The 36-year-old announced the news to followers on Twitter this evening.

"I'm so lucky to have had 12 exceptional but exhausting years with the Ray D'Arcy show and then had the pleasure of producing the brilliant Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show since 2014."

She added that her increasingly busy TV career had contributed to her decision.

She recently joined holiday show Getaways for its latest series as well as presenting Ireland's Fittest Family.

Last September she welcomed her first daughter with her husband Louis.

Speaking on The Ray Darcy Show on RTE One last year she said, Mairead said: “I was married before, it didn’t work out. I have Dara from that marriage and he is the light of my life. I never thought I’d have another one. In fact, I never even thought I’d meet somebody else. Because you think to yourself ‘Who would want me with a broken marriage at 29 and a child’.

“But actually, when I met Louis and when we got really serious I thought, I might have another child. I didn’t want to even wish it would happen in case it didn’t but it did and she’s here and I pinch myself every day.

“I’m delighted to get up and feed her at 3am,” she said.

The Ireland’s Fittest Family presenter revealed that choosing a name for Eliza was a difficult process as she had another moniker picked out for the new baby, which her son despised.

“I felt all along that it was a girl. I had another name that I loved but I said it to Dara and he said ‘Oh please mum, don’t call the baby that name’, he hated it. And I’ve even sworn I won’t say the name out because it’s so awful and he wanted to call the baby Elizabeth. ‘If the baby is a girl we have to call her that’ he said. I thought that was a really old fashioned name for Dara to come up with and I said ‘Look Dara, we’re from the Northside, people might call her Betty’.

“I said ‘How about Eliza, we’ll chop it in half’. It was really Dara who had the idea of it.”

The new mum spoke about her breastfeeding experience and said although it is the easiest option for her, it isn’t for everyone.

“I think it’s the easiest option for me. I’ve seen some of my friends struggle in the past and my sister, who is here with  me tonight... I saw Simone bent over, sweat rolling down her back trying to feed one of her kids and it didn’t work out. She fed the other one for eight months so if it suits you, it suits you,” she said.
