Veteran RTE broadcaster Valerie Cox has announced her retirement.

Ms Cox, who announced her retirement on RTE’s Today with Sean O’Rourke today, described her years in RTE as “wonderful”.

Among her proudest moments, Ms Cox said was the fact that she helped to fundraise €500,000 for the Capuchin Day Centre for Homeless People in Dublin by carrying an outside broadcast from the centre.

Ms Cox also said she travelled to Greece in January and last Autumn with her husband to help Syrian refugees as they arrived on beaches.

“Brian my husband and I were very upset about how they were treated so we travelled over... We were mainly working sitting on the beaches at night making sure they had clothes.”

Ms Cox’s experiences in Greece will be shown on RTE’s Would You Believe next Sunday at 10.30pm.

“I’ve had wonderful years in RTE, I hope to have more,” she said. “I have worked with the most wonderful people over the years.”

She said she worked with a “team of the most creative, intelligent, incisive people.”

Presenter Sean O’Rourke bid her farewell by saying “Valerie, thank you very much, it’s been wonderful working with you.”
