I would have turned down Pat Kenny's job, says Rachael English

RTE radio presenter Rachael English has revealed that she never wanted Pat Kenny's job on morning radio after he left for a rival station.

However, she said her colleague leaving RTE meant big changes for the State broadcaster.

The novelist and radio host said she was probably the only person in RTE who would have turned down the job as his successor.

When Kenny left RTE, after a 41-year relationship with the Donnybrook broadcaster, he left a significant scheduling problem at the 10am morning slot but Rachael said she just wouldn't have been interested in trying to fill his shoes.

"I genuinely had no interest in it.  It's a huge challenge and I know it's not for me at the moment," she said in an interview with TV Now magazine.

"I remember Sean O'Rourke saying that nobody would have turned it down and I was thinking, gosh, I'm probably the only person that would," she said.

She has been working in RTE for almost 23 years and she said that when Kenny jumped ship for Newstalk she noticed a change in the State broadcaster's attitude.

"There was less of 'Well we're RTE and the rest of them can do what they like'," she said.

An increase in advertising their own radio programs, she said, is an indication that RTE are playing close attention to competition from private broadcasters.

"This is the first time that I've worked on a programme that has been advertised.  I think that's an indication that they're taking the competition very seriously," she said.

The hard-working radio anchor is finishing her second novel at the minute and she is happy with the scheduling of her morning show because it gives her time to write in the afternoon.

Her second book is drawing heavily on her media experience and features both a journalist and a politician - two things the Clare woman has expert knowledge in after almost a quarter of a decade in RTE.

She didn't completely rule out ever taking Kenny's old job on the Today show admitting that you can never say never, but for now she is happy to stay where she is.
