Broadcaster and co-presenter of 'The Voice of Ireland' Eoghan McDermott is to get his own evening show on 2fm from September.

The current host of the slot - Colm Hayes - will be moved to weekends.

The move sees McDermott get the prime drivetime slot on 2FM, on which he be broadcasting from Monday to Friday.

McDermott is no stranger to the radio station having guest-hosted Louise McSharry's show while she underwent treatment for cancer.

"It’s also a privilege to be handed the baton by the legendary Colm Hayes, one of the most recognisable voices in the country," he said.

"I look forward to wooing the audience with my original beat poetry. Failing that, a socially reflective, big tune pumping, mischief-making hotpot is order of the day.”

Meanwhile, Colm Hayes will be leaving his regular slot for new show 'Weekend Breakfast with Colm Hayes', which will air from 7am to 10am.

Mr Hayes said the move will allow him more time to "pursue other areas" of his career and develop his company Colm Hayes Media.

"The last 18 months on RTÉ 2fm’s DriveBy have been amazing. Radio always throws up new and exciting challenges and I’m about to take the next challenge," he said.

"Moving to weekend breakfast sort of feels like moving home having done Breakfast for nearly 20 years. It also gives me a great opportunity to pursue other projects with my media company in conjunction with RTÉ.”

Colm's move to weekend morning radio will also kick off in September.
