President Michael D Higgins presented with personalised All Blacks jersey in New Zealand
Sabina got a Black Ferns jersey too
President Michael D Higgins was thrilled to receive a personalised All Blacks jersey as he continued his State Visit of the country.
President Higgins visited the All Blacks head quarters to present a Waterford Crystal cup in memory of Irish man Dave Gallaher - the Captain of The Originals.
The NZRU printed the Number 9 on the back of President Higgins jersey to signify his position as the ninth President of Ireland.
Sabina Higgins, meanwhile, was presented with a Black Ferns jersey.
The President could not leave the building without referencing Ireland’s 2023 Rugby World Cup bid.
“The connection between rugby and Ireland and rugby and New Zealand is deep both in terms of players, and coaching, and supporters,” he said.
“Dave Gallaher was supposed to have said ‘Give nothing away, take no chances'.
"I'm not sure Joe Schmidt believes all of that, but if we are successful in our bid we will be very anxious to welcome you all warmly.”
Earlier in the day, President Higgins became the first Head of State to hold an official meeting with New Zealand’s Prime Minister Elect, Jacinda Ardern.
Ms Ardern, who was once the policy adviser to Tony Blair, was appointed leader of the Labour party in July, and will be sworn into office today.
