Popcorn: Soprano’s creator names rocking cast for new film

Joe Griffin

David Chase, creator of The Sopranos, has announced the cast of his new movie.

The film, a coming-of-age drama set against the backdrop of 60s rock 'n' roll, will feature a cast of rising stars; Jack Huston, nephew of Anjelica and grandson of John, will join relative unknowns Will Brill and John Magaro. Behind the camera, Steve Van Zandt, former Sopranos cast member and Bruce Springsteen collaborator, will act as music supervisor and executive producer.

Megan Fox and Jon Hamm join Friends with Kids

Sexpot actress Megan Fox (right) and Mad Men star Jon Hamm are joining the ensemble cast of Friends with Kids. The comedy will be written and directed by the director of Kissing Jessica Stein (and Hamm's long-term partner), Jennifer Westfeldt.

Friends with Kids will focus on a pair of friends who, seeing the toll that children have on relationships, decide to have a child, but to remain platonic. Adam Scott and Westfeldt will play the leads, Hamm and Fox will play another couple and a third pair has yet to be cast.

Richard Branson discovers Columbus

Not content with pioneering space tourism (Virgin are already doing test flights), Richard Branson is moving into film production. His first major project will be a film about Christopher Columbus directed by McG of all people. The ridiculously named director makes good-looking films, but he's really not a good storyteller; Charlie's Angels 2 was nonsensical and Terminator Salvation had a staggering number of plot holes. Do you find this news disheartening? Well try this on for size: Allegedly, the new film will be made 300-style, with computer-generated backgrounds.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is hot property

One of the hottest scripts in Hollywood right now is Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. The new horror/comedy interpretation of the Jane Austen classic, based on a book by Seth Grahame-Smith, was written by David O'Russell (Flirting with Disaster, Three Kings).

Natalie Portman has dropped out of the lead, and now it looks like Scarlett Johansson will play Elizabeth Bennett and (get this) Bradley Cooper might play Mr Darcy. Of the numerous directors competing to direct the project, Neil Marshall (The Descent) and Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral) are the lead contenders.

Let's do the Time Warp again?

Another hot commodity in Hollywood these days is Ryan Murphy. The creator of Glee and director of Eat Pray Love is working on a new romantic comedy with Julia Roberts and is being courted by Fox Searchlight to direct a remake of The Rocky Horror Show. Initially a moderate hit, the film has gone on to gross over $100m worldwide.

Would you let Mel Gibson give you a tattoo?

And finally, The Hangover 2 is well under way and they've lined up their celebrity cameo. The first film had disgraced boxer Mike Tyson as himself, and part two will feature one Mel Gibson as a Bangkok tattoo artist.
