Pick of the week: Dynasties
Sunday, BBC1, 8pm, Emperors of the south
There was a positively Shakespearean flourish to the opening episode of this remarkable natural history series centred on five of the planet's most celebrated - and endangered - species. Last week it was chimps, and the story of 'David', alpha leader of a group of Senegalese chimpanzees whose authority is about to be challenged.
The way in which his would-be usurpers schemed seemed chillingly human. More chilling still is the dire state in which human encroachment and pollution have left these chimps and the other creatures featured in this brilliantly executed series.
This week it's penguins, Emperors to be precise, and while the planet may be rapidly warming, their world still looks bloody cold to me. On Atka Bay in Antarctica a cruel winter is rapidly approaching, and as the sea freezes every land animal flees. But out of the sea come thousands of Emperor Penguins, who will march inland towards the barren wastelands to form one of the world's greatest animal colonies. For the Antarctic winter is this penguin's breeding time, when the next generation of their dynasty must be created.
They and their parents, though, will face stiff odds in the harshest climate on Earth. Every pair of penguins will rely on the extraordinary strength of their bond and a piece of teamwork that will depend on tenacity and luck. In Dynasties we also see how a broader cooperation between the entire penguin group helps ensure survival as their world is plunged into a sunless night that will last six weeks as blizzards reign and temperatures plunge to -60°C.
