Olympic athlete Perri Shakes-Drayton has said she is “grateful” for the physical challenge of Dancing On Ice 2018.

The former 400m hurdler and runner, 28, has become the tenth star to join the line-up of ITV’s comeback series next year.

She shared the news in an Instagram post on Monday, telling her followers: “Finally … I can let the cat out the bag. It’s official. I’m going to be on Dancing On Ice.

“Oh yes I will be putting the skates on. So grateful for this opportunity. Glad my body can allow for me to do an activity that I thought I’d never be able to do again.

“I’m going to enjoy the journey. It’s a new challenge, I’m up for it and course I’m looking forward to the glamorous outfits. Bring it on.”

Shakes-Drayton will join a total batch of 12 celebrity contestants on next year’s show, including actress Brooke Vincent, singers Cheryl Baker and Jake Quickenden, Love Island winner Kem Cetinay, The Great British Bake Off’s Candice Brown, rugby pro Max Evans, cricketer Monty Panesar and TV presenters Alex Beresford and Donna Air.

Having already had a go on the ice with her professional partner, she joked: “I came across Kem from Love Island and we saw each other at the ice rink. He saw my skills, I saw his skills … I’m better than him.”

This Morning presenters Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby will return as show hosts in next year’s season while the panel will consist of skating legends Torvill and Dean, Jason Gardiner and one still-to-be-named judge.

Next year’s show will mark the end of a three-year hiatus for the programme, which aired for nine seasons until its last outing in 2014 featuring former winners and contestants from the other eight series.

Shakes-Drayton, who first announced the news as she appeared on BBC Radio 1Xtra on Monday, has delighted her followers with her new venture.

One fan responded to her post: “I could actually cry with happiness” while another commented: “So excited for you!!! Your gonna be amazing, will definitely tune in for this.”
