One Direction’s Liam Payne defends tweet supporting US homophobic reality TV star
One Direction’s Liam Payne has defended a tweet he sent in support to Duck Dynasty star Willie Robertson after receiving a major backlash from fans.
Duck Dynasty, a US reality TV series about the Robertson family, has been steeped in controversy after Mr Robertson’s father Phil, who also features in the show, made a series of homophobic comments in an interview with GQ magazine last month.
Referring to his earlier comment, Liam tweeted: "Being a fan of someone's show and the way they still hold a family together doesnt mean i am ok with all they say"
Payne's original tweet - now deleted - read: “@williebosshog huge love to you/your family huge respect for your business prosperities and the family values you still all behold. big fan”
One Direction fans weren’t particularly impressed with Liam’s tweet of support to say the least, with many taking to Twitter and Tumblr to vent their anger.
Youtube personality Tyler Oakley meanwhile wrote: “Wow. Very confused and disappointed by this @Real_Liam_Payne tweet. This literally changes everything…”
Following the backlash, Liam tweeted: “Being a fan of someones show and the way they still hold a family together doesnt mean i am ok with all they say.”

He then turned on the media for writing stories about the incident: “What I gotta do to please you bastards I'm a 20 year old just living life as you did when u where twenty but in extraordinary circumstances.”
“And I know I'm playing into your hands writing these tweets but I'm sick of stupid stories it's time you all grow up...and write about things that actually matter not what im gunna have for dinner tomorrow or who I'm a fan if real stories.”
He added: “Sick of all this bull il be back again when the freedom of speech law is back and people don't believe to much into the bulls#!t they read.”
