Tralee and Waterford dominate the Christmas scene, with the main Kerry congress at the excellent Manor West Hotel on December 30 with open pairs, gala pairs at 1.30pm on New Year's Eve; mixed pairs on New Year's Day; congress pairs at 11.30am on Friday and teams on the final day at 11am. Entries to Trish Stack on 087 625 4284 or Nicky@bridgeireland.com.

Waterford follows immediately at the Tower Hotel. Friday, January 8, mixed pairs at 7.30pm; congress pairs at 1.30pm on January 9 and teams on the final day starting at 11am. Entries to Peggy Holden: peggyholden@ hotmail.co.uk or to james kennington@man.com.

Mai Stephenson is not a name widely known outside the Templeogue Centre, but her work for orphans in India has been outstanding. So was the response from players in Rathfarnham who turned out in force for her annual charity game. The result was a fantastic contribution of €4,000.

Finally, a great idea for Christmas gifts. Contact PeterPigotBridge@gmail.com and order a voucher to cover any of his spring seminars.

Here is a hand that demonstrates the superiority of distribution over hcp.

North's distribution allows an overcall and so the fit is found and with only 18hcp game is on, but not for EW with 22 and a 6-4 fit.
