The new South Dublin Summer Congress may have been a first, but it attracted record entries. The Citywest Hotel coped magnificently with the massive numbers requiring attention at the break on Saturday, when more than 450 players needed food and drink. Maybe there was a minor computer glitch, but so what. The time was made up in brilliant style and we had a team event to remember on Sunday with 27 Mastsr outfits in action. It may have been the first, but it certainly won't be the last and main sponsor, Rom Massey, must have been delighted with the response.

I am very disappointed with the Irish Open team in Norway. After a good start, they faded completely out of contention with a series of heavy losses. That won't do if they are to have any chance of making it to the Bermuda Bowl. 58th was not good.

The Regatta Trophy will be played at the Grand Hotel, Wicklow on July 23 at 7pm. Entries to Maura at 087-7187878.

Wow, talk about luck. Just count the number of successful finesses plus a suit breaking 3-3. From Dublin Congress.

Bidding (N-S vul)

N E S W 1C P 2C P 2NT P 3NT P P P Standard 3NT, but look what happens if you bid the daftest slam in history. S suit breaks 3-3 with finesse right. Clubs break 3-2 with finesse right. Heart finesse right and AJ of Diamonds over KQ. About one per cent and it rolls home.
