THE new season gets off to a flying start with two
super-looking weekends of Bridge. We start with Ballybunion this coming weekend at the Golf Hotel. Not the usual programme, starting with a gala pairs on Friday evening; congress pairs on Saturday and teams on the final day. Entries to Nick Fitzgibbon,
tel: (066) 7185471, or email BridgeIreland@gmail.com

The following weekend, Bray Bridge Club floats out the boat with two Swiss events and buckets of prize money. The Esplanade Hotel is the venue and entries should either go to Brendan Martin at (087) 220-9152, or email
Braybridge@gmail.com

Another superb turn-out for the Regent Summer Festival last week. Just one round to go on Sept 12.
The CBAI team beat Northern Ireland by 491 VP's to 468 in the Britton Trophy played over last weekend.

Back in 2001, Tom Hanlon and Hugh McGann were shortlisted for the best bid hand by the International Bridge Press Association. And how many of us mere mortals will bid a slam after opponents open the bidding?

The double fit prompted Tom to give Hugh the chance to choose a Slam, hence his 3S cue-bid. Mind you, they have the same holding in Hearts and Clubs, but Hugh judged that any losing Diamonds could be thrown on the Hearts.

How right he was.
