Weller and AC/DC battle for No 1
Paul Weller and AC/DC are hoping to top the album charts this weekend in a battle of the mods and rockers.
Modfather Paul is just ahead of hard rock idols AC/DC, but the gap is narrowing.
Sales figures on Friday show Weller's new release Wake Up The Nation is only 3,000 copies ahead of the Aussie-British rockers new album, the soundtrack to the Iron Man 2 movie.
A surge in sales has seen AC/DC close what had been a much bigger lead earlier in the week.
Weller, who was joined at a secret show this week by Noel Gallagher, has already clocked up three solo No 1 albums, while AC/DC - whose new release is essentially a greatest hits - have achieved two.
Gennaro Castaldo of retailer HMV said: "With so many new acts about these days, there aren't as many classic chart face-offs as we've seen in the past. And it's certainly rare to see such iconic 'heritage' artists battling it out for the No 1 album spot in what might be dubbed a bit of a mods versus rockers contest.
"Ultimately, however, the thing that's most important is that, while both acts have very dedicated followings, their music is now being picked up and enjoyed by a whole new generation of fans."
In the singles chart, former X Factor star Diana Vickers looks likely to have her first No 1 with debut single Once.
