A new documentary short highlights some of the prominent female figures in electronic music in Ireland and aims to encourage more women to become DJs and producers.

The #MovetheNeedle film and campaign have just launched across Ireland and Northern Ireland and are running as part of Smirnoff's bigger Global Equalizing Campaign.

It comes on the back of figures released by THUMP revealing that females, trangender and non-binary people made up just 17% of headliners in 2016 at electronic music festivals around the world.

On International Women's Day in March Smirnoff pledged to double this number by 2020 and the Move the Needle campaign in Ireland will contribute to that.

As well as the film, there will be free DJ and production Move the Needle workshops in Galway, Belfast, Dublin and Cork this summer.

Featuring in the Move the Needle documentary is DJ/producer ELLLL (Ellen King), a founder of the GASH Collective, a group of women in the industry who run showcases and training events across Ireland.

“There’s no reason why people - male or female - can’t work together to share knowledge and help each other across the board. There should be cross pollination in all areas. These workshops are really about everyone getting up and having a go, especially for the vinyl and CDJ workshops,” says ELLLL.

Also featuring in the film are Aoife Nic Canna, Sally Cinnamon, and Veronica Vasicka, founder of Minimal Wave Records in New York.
