ELO frontman Jeff Lynne has admitted he was surprised but humbled to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The 67-year-old British rocker was joined at the Los Angeles ceremony by close friends, Travelling Wilburys bandmate Tom Petty and Eagles guitar player Joe Walsh, as his star - the 2,548th on the walk - was unveiled.

Lynne said: "It's got off to a funny start my career, I started out on a plastic Elvis Presley star with one string, and I played every tune of the day on that one string, and it just drove me wild.

"I never expected to be on the Hollywood Walk of Fame with that one string."

"To be amongst all my heroes on this piece of hallowed ground is great."

Petty paid tribute to Lynne, calling him the best musician he has ever known.

He said: "Jeff plays the studio like an instrument, I've known a lot of musicians, I think the best overall musician I've ever met."

Since the Birmingham-born star stopped touring with ELO he has spent most of his time as a producer and songwriter for the likes of Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, former Beatles Sir Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, and with his own super-group the Travelling Wilburys.
