Wail of a time: Sinead plans Picnic warm-up

Ken Sweeney

SINGER Sinead O'Connor will perform in Ireland for the first time in five years tonight.

She will join reggae singer Natty Wailer for his free show on the bandstand in Bray at 9pm, as part of the local festival.

"I've been living in Bray for five years but never had a chance to do a gig here. Natty is a good friend of mine and we got the idea watching Damien Dempsey doing a gig on the bandstand last weekend," Sinead said.

"I'll be doing some lead vocals, and some backing vocals but it will be covers, and not my own songs."

The "informal set" is a warm-up for the 44-year-old's appearance at the Electric Picnic festival next month in which she will be backed by a band.

"I suppose it's just an opportunity for me to get out there singing.

"It's a bit of fun but everybody is welcome," she added.
